Swimming team, Stadium High School, Metcalf, Times. A group portrait of the 1949 swim team. The 1949 Varsity Swimming Team was coached by Walter G. Streeter. The Stadium High School Reserve Swim Team of 1949 created quite a record for themselves. Led by Coach "Cam" Haslam (far rt., back row), a former Tiger swimmer, they won eight straight meets. They went unbeaten and untied, and amassed a total of 390 1/2 points against 158 1/2 for their opponents. (Stadium High School Annual, 1949 Tahoma)

This photograph taken on January 27, 1949 shows Jerry Meyers (3rd from the left) carefully performing his duties as a school patrol officer for McKinley School. The other students are (l to r) Bobby Booth, Donna Fay Lechner, Patricia May Johnston, Billy McDougal, Carroll Barret, and Randy Norton. The Tacoma schools patrol service received national recognition in 1949 for completing 20 years of service, through all kinds of weather, with not one fatality at any school. Pupils from 4th through 9th grades in public and parochial schools attended. Ann Deyo, a fifth grader in Miss Hilda Meisner's class at Lowell School is about to play a recording of "Die Fledermaus" overture by Johann Strauss which they would hear performed at the matinee concert sponsored by the Tacoma Philharmonic and Meadowsweet Dairies, Inc. Four couples are seen square dancing in Jason Lee Junior High School's gym in February of 1949. Beginning at left and working around the wheel are: Sandra Burrows and Jay Grimstead, Sara Lovell and Bob Lang, Pat Holmes and Billy Redfield, and Shirley Boyle and Fred Thomas. They were dancing to the music of Bob Hager's records. Folk dancing gained wider interest among Tacoma's schools during the late 1940's. In February of 1949, two groups of young hoop players known as Mead's Little Devils and the Tillicum Pee-Wee's posed for the Tacoma Times photographer in the Stadium High School Gym. The junior basketball teams were composed of boys all weighing 80 pounds or less. In the back row were Coaches Russ Meade and Art Spencer. Pictured in the back row, left to right, were Bill Fleming, Charles Woodke, Art Kirishian, Bill Keeton, John Fassett, Pete Swan, Michael Lemmon and Gary Paulson. On February 12, 1949, the art honorary fraternity of the College of Puget Sound, Alpha Rho Tau, threw their very first Beaux Arts Ball. The party was given in honor of the College's foreign students and drew students dressed in all sorts of lavish, exotic and creative costumes. A masked couple glided by in fanciful dress; she a column of black and white ruffles and he a rectangular knight. Other couples looked on from tables near a wall decorated with modern drawings. All of the revelers were unidentified with the exception of the woman directly left of the female dancer. She was Maxine Lister, the winner of the first prize for most original costume. An exterior view of Mont Downing Elementary School designed by Lea, Pearson and Richards, Architects. The school was named after Mont Downing, a Tacoma educator who had been an elementary school principal 13 years and district assistant superintendent 11 years. The building had eight classrooms, an auditorium/lunchroom and a large basement playing area; the building cost was $350,000. (TNT, 8/19/1949, p.10) TPL-1558.

On February 6, 1950, Pacific Lutheran College students gaily tossed their shoes off at the door to enjoy the Stocking Shuffle Dance in the gymnasium. Rhoda Young (right), head of the women's physical education department, was on hand to judge most holey, colorful and biggest pairs of socks. Among the finalists in the competition were Walter Masters, Raymond Green and Florence Brandstetter. The prize for the winners was, appropriately, three new pairs of socks. Activities at Annie Wright Seminary. Ten members of the Seminary Athletic Council at Annie Wright Seminary pose with a plaque with a figure of the headless, winged victory. Several smaller, individual, engraved plaques hang from the bottom of the larger plaque. The council was one of the governing bodies at the seminary and planned athletic actiities, Dad's Day, Initiation, and the May Day Banquet. The girls wear one of their uniforms, dark skirts, white blouses with peter pan collars, a scarf at the collar opening and dark v-neck sweaters with the Annie Wright emblem on the left breast.
